Regarding CSS 2.1 support, congratulations Microsoft, on a practical level you're caught up with where the rest of the market was several years ago. I guess it's one of the few things you can measure, and easy to make ad copy for. Watching Jon Stewart stutter away on a slow running computer is much worse than having to wait an additional split second for a tab to open. JavaScript and plugin performance is much more important.

So what if it takes an additional 3 seconds to fire up your browser when you've first booted up. Efficiency is great and all, but really, what does the difference of 25MB or even 100MB of memory make on machines that routinely have 2GB of RAM installed?ĭitto for page loads that differ by tenths and hundredths of a second. I've tried it countless times and everytime I never latch on because it just feels like a ton of features, never feeling like I know how to use them very well, and none of them really changing how I interact with the web. I guarantee you that's one reason people haven't caught on to how great opera is. I just don't give a damn if they are there or not, as a lot of other people don't. I understand how extensions really make life simpler for a lot of people and I have used them extensively.

I didn't give Chrome a try for a while because I figured it was just another Google attempt to corner everything web. Sometimes you get browsing, you don't want to bookmark every webpage under the sun, why not be able to save what you're doing and come back to it later? So far my one gripe is that I can't save a session and open ie later and have all the tabs waiting for me (ala firefox). Now IE8 actually makes me want to consider going back to default.

I still can't believe that pulling out tabs and creating new windows on the fly and managing them just by drag and drop isn't universal. Tab management was great until you had 12+ open. I just want to browse and Chrome did that quickly and with little bloat. I'm behind the ball though when it comes to features available through addons and such but the fact is, I frankly don't give a rats ass what I could be missing.Ĭhrome came along and I loved the minimalist feel to it the best. I started using Firefox quite steadily since 2.0 because their tab management was great and fun to use. 10 still has some bugs in it, but I like a lot of the features they have added, so I'm willing to live with them for now, I'm hoping when it gets officially released they have most of them fixed. It does seem to have issues with memory usage getting out of hand. Oh, and just for clarity, I'm running Opera 10. However Chrome with the same 11 tabs open still uses just 27mb. It does seem to load the pages pretty quickly, and it's definitely an improvement over the old IE, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it uses fewer resources.Įdited to add, I decided to be really accurate I would need to open the exact same 11 pages in IE8, and did so and it's still at 68mb, so for one tab, not very efficient, but very efficient for multiple tabs. Chrome with the same tab, Ars home is using 28mb. By comparision, Opera open with 11 tabs currently is using 106mb. With just one tab, the Ars homepage it's using 68mb which is pretty hefty for just one tab. The article mentioned that IE8 used fewer resources and I was curious how it actually performed.

With this fast release of Internet Explorer 8 (well, yeah, in comparison to Internet Explorer 7, at least) we can again hope to use some of the really cool new CSS and HTML stuff before the next decade ends – and I always thought we would have to wait until 2030 or so -) So even if we won’t see everyone use Firefox anytime soon it already had a really huge impact. And that is why (especially) Firefox deserves so much praise. That’s why Microsoft’s renewed commitment to actually catch up is so great. It would be cool if we could do everything in the Internet without them, but for now we need them. If we want to do cool stuff in the Internet we need Microsoft to spit out updates and for them to really push them. It has been less than three years since Internet Explorer 7 came out. After the horrible Dark Age of Internet Explorer 6 (2001 to 2006) with no progress at all Microsoft is finally picking up speed and delivering important updates. Progress in our time!
